TEFROTEX Primary Deck Coverings

TEFROTEX is the range of cement-based primary deck coverings made by GTF Freese in Bremen. A primary deck covering is the levelling and load-distributing layer applied directly onto a ship’s steel deck, under the finished floor — carpet, PVC, LVT, ceramic tiles or a full floating-floor build-up.

The seven products differ in one thing above all: density, from a 2000 kg/m³ high-strength screed down to a 600 kg/m³ lightweight compound. Choosing between them is a weight-versus-strength decision, and this page puts the numbers side by side.

Choosing a TEFROTEX

Three questions decide it: how much weight the deck can carry, what load the floor has to take, and how thick the layer is allowed to be.

Strength first

  • TEFROTEX 60 · 100 — 30 MPa compressive, 1900–2000 kg/m³
  • Use when: load matters more than tonnage — stores, workshops, service spaces, ceramic-tiled areas
  • Note: 100 is the thin-layer option at 1–15 mm; 60 goes 6–40 mm

The working middle

  • TEFROTEX 90-L · 60-L · 960 — 20 MPa, 950–1000 kg/m³
  • Use when: general accommodation areas — the usual specification
  • Note: 90-L and 960 are pumpable; 90-L covers 0.5–50 mm, the widest span in the range

Weight-critical

  • TEFROTEX 700 · 500 P — 10 MPa, 600–700 kg/m³
  • Use when: every kilo counts — upper decks, superstructure, tonnage-limited newbuilds
  • Note: 500 P uses a Poraver lightweight filler and adds thermal insulation at 0.17 W/mK

    Every product in the range is certified for surface flammability — the requirement for deck coverings in accommodation and service spaces on SOLAS vessels.

  • Density 600–2000 kg/m³

    A 30 mm layer over 1000 m² is roughly 60 tonnes in TEFROTEX 60 and 18 tonnes in 500 P. On a weight-limited hull that difference decides the specification.

  • Layer thickness 0.5–50 mm

    From a 0.5 mm skim in 90-L to a 50 mm lightweight build-up in 500 P — the range covers levelling and full deck build-up without changing supplier.

  • Pumpable options

    TEFROTEX 90-L and 960 can be machine-pumped as well as hand-applied, which is what makes large accommodation areas practical.

  • Pot life 30 minutes

    Consistent across the range, so yard crews work to one rhythm regardless of which product a given deck calls for.

  • Application 5–30 °C

    Most of the range works from +5 °C; TEFROTEX 60 needs +10 °C and 960 needs +8 °C. Worth checking against yard conditions in winter.

Which TEFROTEX should I use?

It is a trade-off between weight and strength. TEFROTEX 60 and 100 are the dense, high-strength options (30 MPa compressive) for decks where load matters more than tonnage. TEFROTEX 90-L, 60-L and 960 sit in the middle around 950–1000 kg/m³. TEFROTEX 700 and 500 P are the lightweight compounds for weight-critical newbuilds, at 700 and 600 kg/m³ — 500 P uses a Poraver lightweight filler and adds thermal insulation at 0.17 W/mK.

How thick can a TEFROTEX layer be?

It varies by product. TEFROTEX 100 is a thin-layer screed at 1–15 mm. TEFROTEX 90-L covers the widest range at 0.5–50 mm and can be pumped. TEFROTEX 500 P is laid at 10–50 mm as a thick lightweight build-up. Always confirm the layer thickness against the substrate and the finished floor in the specification.

Are TEFROTEX products IMO certified?

Yes. Every product in the range holds certification under IMO FTP Code 2010 Part 5 (surface flammability), which is the requirement for deck coverings in accommodation and service spaces on SOLAS vessels. Certificates are supplied with the quotation.

Which products are pumpable?

TEFROTEX 90-L and TEFROTEX 960 can be machine-pumped as well as hand-applied, which matters on large accommodation areas where hand-mixing seven hundred bags is not realistic. The remaining products are hand-applied.
